Suicide is now the leading cause of death in the homeless youth population. Mortality rates due to suicide in this area can be as much as 20 times higher than in the general population. It is estimated that annually, over 5000 kids commit suicide due to the stress of having to live on the street.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that within 48 hours of hitting the streets, one-third of these kids are lured or recruited into the underground world of prostitution and pornography. 65% of runaways are girls. The average age of a runaway is 14.7 years.
